Beatles albums finally go platinum

2 September 2013 Last updated at 11:27 GMT

Classic Beatles albums including Revolver have
finally gone platinum after the British
Phonographic Industry (BPI) changed its
sales award rules.

The band broke up in 1970 after scoring 11
number one albums and 17 number one singles

Gold or platinum status has become synonymous with record success but the system has only been in place since 1973, after the Beatles broke up.
Until last month, the BPI relied on a record company to request an award.

Under the new system, sales figures are automatically recognised as soon as a record passes the relevant threshold.

This means that 13 Beatles albums will now be recognised for the first time, although the number of sales can only be counted from 1994, when the Official Charts Company began keeping records.
That means that Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band is now a triple-platinum album, having sold more than 900,000 copies since 1994. In total, the album is estimated to have sold 5.1 million units in the UK since its 1967 release.

The albums Revolver, Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver and The White Album now also have platinum status.
Classic albums from Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys and Marvin Gaye will also receive awards.

Madonna is highest-earning celebrity

By: Bonnie Malkin, 27 August 2013
Pop star Madonna was the world's top-earning celebrity over the past year,
trumping the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg.
The 55-year-old Material Girl made an estimated $125m (£80m) thanks to her MDNA tour,
clothing and fragrance lines, according to Forbes.
The magazine said it was the most money Madonna had made in a single year since it began
tracking earnings in 1999.
Director Steven Spielberg was at number two with $100m (£64m).
Most of his earnings came from his back catalogue of film hits such as ET and Jurassic Park - which has just been released in 3D to mark its 20th anniversary - as well as last year's Oscar winning Lincoln.
The director also takes a cut of all ticket sales at Universal Studios theme parks.
Lady Gaga featured at number 10 on the list

Third place was a three-way tie between 50 Shades of Grey author EL James, Simon Cowell and shock jock Howard Stern, with earnings of $95m (£61m).
Thriller writer James Patterson follows with $91m (£58.5m), while TV and radio host Glenn Beck earned $90m (£57.8m).
Others in the top 10 included Transformers director Michael Bay ($82m, £52.7m) producer Jerry Bruckheimer ($80m, £51.4m) and pop star Lady Gaga ($80m).
Forbes compiles its annual list of celebrity earnings using input from agents, managers, producers and others to calculate its estimates for each celebrity's entertainment-related earnings.
The figures do not reflect tax deductions, agent fees or "the other expenses of being a celebrity".

One Direction have revealed the title and release date of their new album.
The band used Twitter to tell fans it's going to be called Midnight Memories and be released on 25 November.
It's their third studio album and is the follow up to 2012's Take Me Home after their debut album, Up All Night, was released in 2011.
The former X Factor contestants' film, This Is Us, made £20 million at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend last month.
The five-piece were also included in the Guinness Book of World Records this week.
VMAs ceremony
They secured an entry for the highest debuting British group in the US singles chart with Live While We're Young, which charted at number three last year.
Last month their single Best Song Ever was awarded Song Of The Summer at the MTV VMAs.
During the ceremony Harry Styles from the band was criticised by his ex-girlfriend, US country star, Taylor Swift.
Picking up an award for I Knew You Were Trouble the singer dedicated it to "the man who inspired it", reportedly a reference to Harry Styles.
The band's popularity shows no signs of slowing down though with a world stadium tour planned for May 2014, with five dates in the UK.

Review: Jason Mraz at the Santa Barbara Bowl

Things Get Emotional at Labor Day Benefit Concert
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, September 3, 2013
By Rachel Cabakoff
The Santa Barbara Bowl welcomed Jason Mraz on a scorching Labor Day for an early show as part of his Tour Is a Four Letter Word outing. The late afternoon set list paired well with the long weekend, as well as the night’s do-good message.

Nonprofit Life Rolls on (LRO) was the beneficiary of Monday’s concert supporting spinal-cord-injury research and quality-of-life support. Founder Jesse Billauer and Mraz worked closely together and put the show on to honor the 17th anniversary of Billauer’s surfing accident, which happened when he was 17 years old.

Mraz’s band proved to be a solid pop/jazz ensemble that included a saxophonist, a trumpet player, and a bassist, all of whom contributed notable solos throughout the show. Mraz also reworked some numbers, including inserting quick vibrato phrases into “Only Human” and “Live High.” Later, “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” got mashed up with Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O” song, successfully injecting the show with a necessary dose of reggae. The laid-back vibes carried over to “You and I Both,” which Mraz used as a bridge to his cover of Bob Marley’s “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.”

A variety of guests were welcomed up to the mike, too, including drummer Michael “Leroy” Bram, percussionist Toca Rivera, and budding singer Cody Lovaas. Together, the crew sang “Rescue,” which Mraz dedicated to all of the volunteers of LRO.

Things got surprisingly emotional when Billauer came out to express his gratitude and appreciation for the audience’s support. “Being able to change people’s lives one event at a time, to me, is priceless,” Billauer said before Mraz returned to encore with the fittingly touching “Song for a Friend.”

Harry Styles Expects Taylor Swift To Write Lyrics About Him

Harry Styles of One Direction is currently single and ready to mingle (to the delight of Directioners around the globe), but there was a time where he was briefly snatched up by notorious dater Taylor Swift. The famous pair started dating in the fall of 2012, but broke things off early this year, and now the world is expecting a breakup anthem from Swift on her next album about Styles. But what does the boy band member have to say about being a muse? Us Weekly sat down with the singer and shared his thoughts on being a lyrical inspiration:

"It would be hypocritical for me to say she couldn't do it because everybody writes songs based on personal experience. I can't say I'd have dated someone less famous to avoid it. At least she's a great songwriter!"

We think that's a good attitude to have, Harry! And he's right: Swift is one impressive songwriter, and we can't wait to hear the new material she's been working on all year. Maybe a new album is due for 2014?

Following the shoot she added: "Hot day on set... ;) A little dirty, little flirty, danced my ASS off. Stoked for tomorrow!"

Posting an image, she wrote: "#workb***h".
In the snap, sent to Instagram, she is seen showing off a killer toned stomach that she has reportedly been working hard to earn.
She's also thought to have been spending a lot of time with her choreographer and vocal coach ahead of the launch of the new single, and also ahead of her long-rumoured Las Vegas residency.
The star's last album Femme Fatale was released back in 2011, spawning the hits 'Hold It Against Me', 'Till The World Ends' and 'I Wanna Go'.
Last year she teamed up with will.i.am for 'Scream And Shout', and earlier this year she unveiled her Smurfs 2 soundtrack contribution 'Ooh La La’.

Sir Paul McCartney reveals new single and album

Sir Paul McCartney has announced details of a new solo album and shared a track from the record called New.
He told BBC 6 Music's Matt Everitt: "It's catchy, it's summery, it's a love song. I think people will recognise it as definitely me."
The album - also called New - will be Sir Paul's first solo album since 2007's Memory Almost Full.
Due for release in October, it features 12 songs on which he worked with producers Paul Epworth and Mark Ronson.
"The record is very varied. I worked with four producers and each of them brought something different," said Sir Paul.
DJ and producer Ronson is known for his work with a host of award-winning stars including the late Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga and Lily Allen.

Improvisation

"Mark's work with Amy [Winehouse] was sensational, so I knew he'd be good. He knows his music, he knows what he likes and the two of us together took the song and tried to put the maximum vibe into it.
"We had a lot of fun. He brought expertise, energy, enthusiasm and the odd laugh or two."
Sir Paul, who won his 17th Grammy Award earlier this year, described the first track, New, as "very positive".
"It's a love song but it's saying don't look at me I haven't got any answers. It says I don't know what's happening, I don't know how it's all happening, but it's good and I love you."
The former Beatle revealed that his collaboration with Epworth, who was responsible for Adele's Skyfall theme song, involved "improvisation".
"The tracks that are Paul's on the album weren't written. I didn't bring them in, which is my normal method," he said.
"[He] works completely differently. We went into the studio the first day I ever met him and he outlined [his] idea and said 'let's just make it up'.
"I just started knocking something out on the piano, he started drumming to it, and I stuck a bit of bass on it and we had the basis of the song worked out."
Other producers on the album include Ethan Johns, who has worked with artists including Ryan Adams and Kings of Leon, and Giles Martin, the son of Sir George Martin, the producer of almost all of The Beatles' records.
The album is due for release in the UK on 14 October and in the US on 15 October.
